What Is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 empowers Californians to make informed decisions by mandating that businesses disclose potential exposures to potentially hazardous chemicals, such as those found in products purchased, homes or workplaces. This warning system provides an extra layer of protection for the citizens and ultimately their families from carcinogens, birth defects and other reproductive harm-causing agents.

California businesses are prohibited from knowingly discharging significant levels of the listed chemicals as specified in Proposition 65 into sources of drinking water.

In November 1986, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 - otherwise known as Proposition 65 - was passed by California voters in a landslide 63-37 percent majority.

What Types Of Chemicals Are On The Proposition 65 List?

This extensive list comprises both naturally occurring and man-made chemicals, from additives in pesticides to household items like food, drugs, dyes or solvents. These compounds can also be utilized for manufacturing and construction purposes; some may even result as byproducts of chemical processes such as emissions from vehicles.

Since its initial publication in 1987, the list of chemicals has rapidly expanded to include nearly 900 elements and continues to expand annually.
